Hi there!
If you have completed the first cheesecloth class in this series, Windswept Pine, you already know how exciting it is to take a fabric (cheesecloth), turn it briefly into a malleable - almost liquid - form, and then stitch it down in that new, sculpted shape. That class is the perfect introduction to how to work with this unique textile.
Cheesecloth is an amazing addition to a fiber artist's fabric collection: it can be dyed, painted, or shaped to add movement and incredible texture to your artworks. And when its properties of transparency and opacity are employed, it can create amazing drama and dimension.
If this is your first foray into the land of cheesecloth, welcome to my world! Windswept Pine graduates will see that some information (like explaining what Dura-lar is) is repeated, but everything else will be quite new. I will guide you through some exercises that will teach you basic techniques of sculpting and applique, and then the steps in creating a simple face from cheesecloth, stitching it to a background, and finishing it - all in a day, if you want. Or take your time and really enjoy the creative process. I will be right there with you, and you can watch me as I complete each step.
I have structured this course into five sections. After you have completed the warm-up exercises, you'll learn how to draw your pattern to make the value changes easy to follow; the third takes you through all the steps in the creation of the cheesecloth portrait; the fourth shows how to appliqué your cheesecloth face to a background fabric; and finally, some finishing options for your portrait.
Excited? Let's dive in!
